PELLA — For the second straight year, Central College’s Eli Horton (junior, Runnells, Southeast Polk HS) has been named the Central Region men’s track athlete of the year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Horton, earlier tabbed the 2014 Iowa Conference track athlete of the year, was also the USTFCCCA’s the men’s indoor track athlete of the year for 2014 after taking outdoor honors in 2013.

“This is a tribute to his hard work,” said coach Joe Dunham. “Eli is very committed to his running and this award is certainly well-deserved. We’re very proud of all of his achievements.”

Last Saturday Horton earned all-America honors Saturday at the NCAA Division III championships in Delaware, Ohio by finishing fourth in the 5,000 meters in 14:24.76. He also received all-America distinction in indoor track by finishing third in the 3,000 meters in March and by placing fourth in the mile in 2013. And he’s a two-time all-America performer in men’s cross country, placing 29th nationally in 2012 and fourth last November.

He’s received Iowa Conference athlete of the week honors in indoor/outdoor track and cross country 10 times and was the league’s men’s cross country MVP in 2012.
