Men's tennis | May 2, 2014

CEDAR RAPIDS — Central College advanced to the semifinals of the six-team Iowa Conference men’s tennis qualifier with a 5-0 shutout of Buena Vista Friday.

The tourney determines the league’s automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division III Championships.

The Dutch (13-8) take on top-seeded Coe College on the Kohawks’ home courts at 9 a.m. Third-seeded Luther College faces Wartburg College in the other semifinal. The championship and third-place matches follow.

Central swept the doubles Friday, as West Adelman (sophomore, Geneva, Ill.) and Tim Kahl (junior, Grinnell) were 8-0 winners at No. 1, Josh Forst (junior, Woodridge, Ill., Downers Grove South HS) and John Seier (senior, Waverly, Neb.) prevailed 8-3 at No. 2 and Kyle Freischlag (senior, Downers Grove, Ill., South HS) and Chris Kosmicki (junior, Greeley, Colo., Northridge HS) pulled out a 9-8 win in a tiebreaker at No. 3. The latter result reversed an 8-6 defeat Freischlag and Kosmicki suffered against the Beavers at Pella April 12.

In singles, Kahl was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at No. 2 and BJ Cunningham (senior, Cedar Rapids, Kennedy HS) coasted 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6. The match was called after the clinching fifth victory.

“We played well,” coach Steve Tyler said. “It’s the team we needed to beat, obviously.”

League champion Coe stopped the Dutch 8-1 at Pella April 8, but Tyler expects his squad to make a good showing.

“We just have to let it all hang out,” he said. “We’ve got nothing to lose. I just want the players to play confidently and play as well as we can. We competed very well against them last time.

“Win or lose, it’s been a pleasure to coach this team. They’ve got the right attitude and play really well.”
