15 NCAA Div. III individual championships
DES MOINES—The Central College track and field teams closed out competition at the Drake Relays Saturday with a trio of unconventional events.
The Dutch men’s 1,600 sprint medley relay team of Mitch Wagoner (senior, Iowa Falls, Iowa Falls-Alden HS), Dan Roemerman (sophomore, Iowa City, City High HS), Mason Zimmerman (junior, Urbandale) and Jamie Vander Veer (junior, Knoxville) placed 20th in 3:33.74.
On the women’s side, Abi Davis (sophomore, Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS), Monica Ruiz (sophomore, Hudson), Camie Kibbee (junior, Mason City) and Elin Phipps (sophomore, Boone) combined for a 13th-place finish in the 1,600 sprint medley relay.
Central’s 4x100-meter shuttle hurdle relay team of Emma Drees (freshman, Waukee), McKenna Zimmerman (junior, Urbandale), Abby Saladino (sophomore, Long Grove, North Scott HS) and Meredith Zimmerman (junior, Urbandale) was ninth in its respective preliminary race, finishing in 65.81 seconds, but missing out on the finals.
“The Drake Relays proved to be a great meet for us,” coach Joe Dunham said. “I was really proud of how well we competed. Our women’s 4x4 team ran very well and put us in position to qualify for the NCAA meet.
“But there’s a lot more out there for our women.”
“It was also great to see our men’s 4x1600 team crush the record we set last year. We gained a lot of confidence this weekend and that will help us prepare for the conference meet.
But before the conference meet, the Dutch track and field teams will compete at the Monmouth (Ill.) Invitational next Saturday, which the team will use as a tune-up.
