Central track competes at Drake Relays, Kip Janvrin Open

DES MOINES—The Central College track and field teams continued competition at the Drake Relays Friday with multiple relay teams, while individuals made their mark at the Kip Janvrin Open hosted by Simpson College.

The Dutch men’s distance medley relay team of Austin O’Brien (senior, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS), Mason Zimmerman (junior, Urbandale), Drew Jackson (junior, Johnston) and Eli Horton (junior, Runnells, Southeast Polk HS) placed fourth in 9:58.32, less than three seconds off the school record set in 2013.

The Central women’s 4x400-meter relay team of Allie McBroom (junior, Runnells, Southeast Polk HS), Abi Davis (sophomore, Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS), Camie Kibbee (junior, Mason City) and Monica Ruiz (sophomore, Hudson) posted a season-best time for any Dutch quartet of 3:52.45 en route to 17th place.

Competition resumes Saturday at 8 a.m.

INDIANOLA—The Central College track and field teams also sent athletes to the Kip Janvrin Open and returned with multiple top performers.

In Friday’s four field events, Steven Messerschmidt (senior, Neola, Tri-Center HS) led the way with a third-place finish in the hammer throw with a toss of 170-feet-6.

Kody Dailey (sophomore, Iowa City, City High HS) matched Messerschmidt’s place, but in the javelin, with a personal-best throw of 165-7. Gunnar Johnson (junior, Ankeny, Johnston HS) posted a season-best 146-9 for seventh.

Johnson and Messerschmidt also finished seventh, eighth, in the shot put.

Dan Roemerman (sophomore, Iowa City, City High HS) and Mitch Wagoner (senior, Iowa Falls, Iowa Falls-Alden HS) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 100-meter dash with times of 11.13 and 11.21.

Mike Mackin (senior, Manly, Central Springs HS) set a personal best in the long jump with a leap of 22-2.25, good for sixth place. Brian Zahnle (junior, Morrison, Ill., Fulton HS) also topped his previous best with a mark of 20-9.75 for 14th.

Whitney Pavlat (senior, Pella) was fourth in the javelin with a mark of 116-2.

Elin Phipps (sophomore, Boone) was the fifth finisher in the 800-meter run, crossing the line in 2:15.52, tying her personal record.

Molly Bramble (sophomore, Waukee) ran a personal-record 5:01.68 in the 1,500-meter run en route to 19th place.
