PRs galore for Dutch track teams at Central Open

PELLA—The Central College men’s and women’s track and field teams posted top performances at their home Central Open Wednesday, with personal records in many events.

Team scores were not kept.

Messerschmidt tosses hat trickSteven Messerschmidt (senior, Neola, Tri-Center HS) won the hammer throw with a mark of 177-4. The distance was tops by more than 18 feet and less than four feet from his career best. Josh Tack (junior, Hudson) also had a career mark of 143-11 for fourth. Messerschmidt went on to claim the discus and shot put titles as well. His discus throw of 139-05 was just shy of a season best, while his 48-11.5 shot was a season best. Tack finished third in the discus and fifth in the shot.

Drew Jackson (junior, Johnston) dominated the 3,000-meter run in 9:07.09, finishing more than 27 seconds ahead of second. It shattered his previous career best by nearly one minute.

Fellow distance runner Jamie Vander Veer (junior, Knoxville) took home the 1,500-meter run title in 4:04.29. Teammate Isaac Steffensmeier (freshman, St. Paul, Fort Madison HS) was third.

Timothy Shepherd (junior, Knoxville) was best in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing in 10:31.90. Teammate Cody Doughan (senior, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) was runner-up in 10:38.05.

Dan Roemerman (sophomore, Iowa City, City High HS) finished runner-up in the 200-meter dash, crossing the line in 22.48 seconds. It is a career-best time by 0.51. LJ Lipscomb (junior, Johnston) was also runner-up, but in the 400-meter dash in 53.76. Conner Freeman (junior, Urbandale) was runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles in a personal-best 15.38.

Nick Lemmon (junior, Kent, Wash., Kent-Meridian HS) set a career best by more than six inches in the pole vault, clearing 13-3.5 for runner-up honors. Jaemin Powell (sophomore, Wellman, Mid-Prairie HS) was also runner-up, but in the javelin, with a throw of 151-2.

Austin Witt (freshman, Washington) was third in the 100-meter dash is a personal record 11.08 seconds.

Davis, distance runners soarAbi Davis (sophomore, Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS) was fastest in the 100-meter dash, finishing in 12.14. The wind-aided time was 0.03 seconds off of the school record set by Felicia Coleman in 2012. Davis was also the 200-meter dash champion, finishing in 25.50. Monica Ruiz (sophomore, Hudson) was runner-up in the 200 and third in the 100.

Elin Phipps (sophomore, Boone) won the 1,500-meter run in 4:59.27, best by more than five seconds. Fellow distance runner Emma Jo Nelson (senior, Hedrick, Pekin HS) was best in the 3,000-meter run in 11:22.06, while Andie Arthofer (freshman, Dubuque, Senior HS) finished third.

Meredith Zimmerman (junior, Urbandale) finished runner-up in the 100-meter hurdles in a personal-best time of 15.36 seconds.

Hillary Hotz (junior, Fort Dodge, St. Edmond HS) tied with the first-place finisher in the high jump, clearing 5-5. The height is a personal record.

April McCarthy (sophomore, Stoughton, Wis.) was runner-up in the hammer throw with a toss of 126-1, a personal best by nearly four feet. McCarthy was also third in the shot put and fifth in the discus.

Whitney Pavlat (senior, Pella) finished third in the javelin throw with a toss of 114-6. Maddy Frehe (senior, De Soto, Kan.) was also third, but in the pole vault, clearing 9-0.25.

Three Dutch men’s track athletes—Eli Horton (junior, Runnells, Southeast Polk HS), Austin O’Brien (senior, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) and Cole Decker (sophomore, Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS)—are slated to run at the Mt. SAC Relays Thursday and Friday. The full Central squads return to action next Wednesday through Saturday at the Drake Relays. Select athletes will also compete at the Kip Janvrin Open Friday and Saturday.
