Men's track | April 16, 2014

PELLA—The Central College men’s track and field team retained its top-10 status at No. 9 in this week’s U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III outdoor national rankings.

The Dutch competed at the Jim Duncan Invitational Friday and Saturday. Led by Iowa Conference men’s track events performer of the week Drew Jackson (junior, Johnston), Central tallied a handful of top finishers. Jackson was runner-up to South Dakota State’s Andrew Thies in Friday’s 3,000-meter steeplechase before winning Saturday’s 1,500-meter run.

Other top finishers included Eli Horton’s (junior, Runnells, Southeast Polk HS) runner-up performance to Jackson in the 1,500, fellow distance runner Jamie Vander Veer’s (junior, Knoxville) third-place effort in the 800, Dan Roemerman’s (sophomore, Iowa City, City High HS) third-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles and Steven Messerschmidt’s (senior, Neola, Tri-Center HS) third-place shot put.

Wis.-La Crosse, the 2013 outdoor national champion, remained the top-ranked team. Wis.-Eau Claire and Wis.-Oshkosh swapped spots and are Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, followed by Wis.-Whitewater. Mount Union (Ohio) rounds out the top five, followed by North Central (Ill.), Whittier (Calif.), Wartburg, the Dutch and Whitworth (Wash.).

Central is back in action Wednesday at the Central College Open. Field events are slated to begin at 2 p.m., with running events starting at 2:30 p.m.
