Central No. 12 in NFCA softball rankings

Softball | April 16, 2014

PELLA—The Central College softball team dropped one spot to No. 12 in this week’s National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III rankings following a 4-2 record over the past eight days which included a 6-5 win over then No. 5-ranked Luther College.

The Dutch (26-6 overall, 6-2 conference) earned a pair of splits in their road doubleheaders against Luther and Buena Vista on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Central’s win over the Norse was coach George Wares’ 1,000th, allowing him to become the first softball coach in NCAA Division III history to reach the milestone. The Dutch opened up their six-game homestand with a sweep of Loras with both games lasting only five innings.

Catcher Katie Canney (junior, Adel, ADM HS) led Central offensively, hitting .444 (8-18) and slugging .611 over the six games with one home run, seven runs batted in and three runs scored. Shortstop Annie Sarcone (senior, Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS) hit .333 (6-18) and slugged .778 with two home runs, two doubles, 8 RBIs and seven runs scored, all without making a defensive error.

Central returns to the diamond Saturday when Simpson College (20-12 overall, 5-3 conference) visits for a 2 p.m. league doubleheader.

Salisbury (Md.) (31-1) remained the top-ranked team, but is now a unanimous selection. Montclair State (N.J.) (25-1), Texas-Tyler (32-2), defending national champion Tufts (Mass.) (21-3) and Trine (Ind.) (24-1) completed the top five, while Linfield (Ore.) (31-7), East Texas Baptist (29-5), Luther (21-6), Coe (26-5) and Piedmont (Ga.) (41-6) rounded out the top 10.
