Central track makes splash at Jim Duncan

DES MOINES—The Central College track and field teams made a splash at the Jim Duncan Invitational Friday, led by junior Drew Jackson’s (Johnston) runner-up finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

The Dutch men finished with 10 point scorers, while the Dutch women had three.

Competition resumes Saturday at 8:30 a.m.

Baumgartner, Gornick, Beckman score—Senior Daphne Baumgartner (Perry) and freshman Cassidy Gornick (Norwalk) finished fourth and fifth in the 10,000-meter run with times of 43:05.11 and 44:33.03, respectively.

Junior Taylor Beckman (Panora, Panorama HS) placed eighth in the long jump with a leap of 16-1.75.

Jackson runner-up to DI opponent—Jackson led the way for the Dutch men, finishing runner-up to South Dakota State’s Andrew Thies in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:31.86. Senior Cody Doughan (Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) also scored for Central, finishing eighth in 10:07.08.

The distance contingent was present once again, as freshman Isaac Steffensmeier (St. Paul, Fort Madison HS) was sixth in the 5,000-meter run in 14:51.57. Junior Timothy Shepherd (Knoxville) placed seventh in the 10,000-meter run, finishing in 34:29.56.

Senior Steven Messerschmidt (Neola, Tri-Center HS) led the way in the field events by placing third in the shot put with a toss of 47-6.25, a career best by a full foot. Junior Gunnar Johnson (Ankeny, Johnston HS) also scored with a mark of 46-2, good for fifth.

Freshman Logan Mulford (Mount Pleasant) finished fourth in the high jump by clearing 6-4, a personal record, while sophomore Jaemin Powell (Wellman, Mid-Prairie HS) also scored with a mark of 6-0 for eighth place.

Junior Brian Zahnle (Morrison, Ill., Fulton HS) was sixth in the triple jump with a personal-best leap of 42-11. Sophomore Kody Dailey (Iowa City, City High HS) was also sixth, but in the javelin, with a personal-best toss of 161-01.
