Dutch fire sub-300 round to close men’s golf tourney

Men's golf | April 5, 2014

NORMAL, ILL.—The Central College men’s golf team improved on its first-round total by 15 strokes, firing a 314-299—613 en route to a sixth-place finish following Saturday’s final round at the 21-team Illinois Wesleyan Invitational.

“We played a lot better today,” coach Chad Green said. “We made some progress and moved up the leaderboard. The conditions were right for low scores. It was a solid effort.”

The invitational, hosted by top-ranked Illinois Wesleyan, included No. 20-ranked Univ. of Dubuque, No. 25-ranked Nebraska Wesleyan Univ. and Millikin Univ. (Ill.), which is receiving votes. The field also boasted eight schools from last week’s Webster Gorlok Invitational, including co-champion Spalding Univ. (Ky.).

Playing the par-72, 7,030-yard Ironwood Golf Course, each Dutch golfer improved on his first-round score, led by junior Desmond Stoll’s (Lockport, N.Y.) eight-stroke improvement for a 79-71—150, tying for 11th.

“I’m really happy with Desmond’s play,” said Green. “It was good to see him shoot under par to close out the tournament. That’s always promising.”

Junior David Watson (San Diego, Calif., Patrick Henry HS) was Central’s second finisher with 78-75—153. Sophomore Jared Nepomuceno (Corona, Calif., Santiago HS) and junior Jon Prescott (Mendota, Ill.) each totaled 155, while senior Mike Maller (Davenport, Central HS) rounded out the lineup with 82-78—160.

Central was one of four teams to card less than 300 in Saturday’s final round.

The host Titans fired a 303-289—592 to take the team title, led by individual medalist Tony Albano’s 74-70—144. Nebraska Wesleyan was second with 309-290—599, followed by Dubuque’s 301-301—602, Millikin’s 306-298—604 and Parkland’s 310-301—611.

“We always want to play the best competition and there were some really good teams at this tournament,” said Green. “We lost to Spalding last week, but beat them this week. It’s all about preparing for conference.

“We’ll get back to work Monday.”

The Dutch return to the links Friday at the Wartburg Invitational. Play is slated for Centennial Oaks Golf Course at Waverly.
