15 NCAA Div. III individual championships
ST. LOUIS, MO.—The Central College men’s and women’s track and field teams opened the outdoor season with multiple personal records at the Washington-St. Louis Invitational Friday.
Thrower Steven Messerschmidt (senior, Neola, Tri-Center HS) and distance runner Eli Horton (junior, Runnells, Southeast Polk HS) each posted top-five finishes on the men’s side, while thrower Whitey Pavlat (senior, Pella) matched their accomplishment on the women’s side.
Through five events the Dutch men are fifth of 21 teams with 14 points. Wis.-Platteville leads the way with 32 points. Through six events the Dutch women are tied for 19th of 22 teams with four points. Northwestern Univ. sits atop the standings with 33 points.
Competition resumes Saturday at 10 a.m.
Messerschmidt PRs in the hammer throw—Messerschmidt was third in the hammer throw with a toss of 180-08, besting his previous personal record by exactly 18 feet. Horton was fifth in the 5,000-meter run, crossing the line in 14:22.77.
Sophomore multi-eventer Kody Dailey (Iowa City, City High HS) and senior thrower Levi Ross (Wellsburg, Grundy Center HS) also scored, placing seventh and eighth in the javelin throw, respectively, with tosses of 158-02 and 157-06.
Pavlat PRs in javelin throw—Pavlat notched a career-best in the javelin throw with a toss of 123-05 for fifth place. It topped her previous best by more than nine feet.
