Dutch remain No. 4 in NFCA softball poll

Softball | March 19, 2014

PELLA—The Central College softball team remained No. 4 in this week’s National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III rankings, which includes games played through Sunday.

The Dutch (6-2) opened their season with six straight wins at the Tucson Invitational Games, outscoring their opponents 61-0 in the process. Central scored 12 runs or more on three occasions, including a 14-0 (5 inn.) win over Dickinson (Pa.) in its season opener Friday and a 14-0 (5 inn.) win over Marian (Wis.) the next day.

Senior shortstop Annie Sarcone (Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS) was named Iowa Conference female athlete of the week after batting .632 and slugging .895 in the half-dozen games. She was 12-for-19 overall with 13 runs batted in and six runs scored, highlighted by a 3-for-3, five-RBI performance in an 8-0 (5 inn.) win over Crown (Minn.) Saturday.

Sophomore pitcher Trisha Smith (New Hampton) was named league pitcher of the week after pitching 17.0 shutout innings in four appearances, highlighted by two complete-game shutouts. She struck out six batters in the win over Crown and eight in Sunday’s 6-0 win over Marian, the second Dutch victory over the Sabres in Arizona.

Salisbury (Md.), which opened the season 14-0, took the top spot away from defending national champion and now No. 2-ranked Tufts (Mass.) (3-1). Montclair State (N.J.) (7-1) and East Texas Baptist (17-1) are Nos. 3 and 5, respectively. Luther (7-1), Virginia Wesleyan (15-1), Piedmont (Ga.) (20-2), Texas-Tyler (17-1) and Linfield (Ore.) (15-1) completed the top 10. Coe (10-1), another traditional conference contender, is ranked No. 12.
