Central’s Davis sprints for All-America status at women’s track nationals

Women's track | March 12, 2014

PELLA—Central College women's track and field sprinter Abi Davis (sophomore, Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS) qualified for two events—the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash—in this weekend’s 2014 NCAA Division III indoor championships at Lincoln, Neb.

Hosted by Nebraska Wesleyan, competition begins Friday inside Devaney Sports Center at 11 a.m. with heptathlon and pentathlon events.

“Abi has had a great year,” coach Joe Dunham said. “It’s great to look at her progress from the beginning of the season to the end. This is her first chance to run on the big stage, so it’ll be fun to see how she responds.”

Davis secured her spot in the 60-meter dash after a top-10 time at the Iowa Conference indoor championships at Decorah Feb. 28. Her No. 7-ranked qualifying time of 7.72 seconds was converted from her 55-meter dash title race, which she won in 7.20. The top qualifying time is a mere 0.10 seconds ahead of Davis’ time.

She followed up that performance with a runner-up showing in the league’s 200-meter dash finals, but her season-best time of 25.21 at the Iowa Invitational at Iowa City Feb. 21 was already enough. Davis narrowly made the cut, tying for the 16th-fastest time in the nation. Less than one second separates all 17 competitors.

“Abi needs to focus on the things she can control,” said Dunham. “She needs to remember that it’s just another race. If she does those things, she’ll be right in the mix. Each runner is talented and there’s not a lot of separation. It’ll be an exciting day.”

The women’s 60-meter dash prelims are scheduled for Friday at 3:45 p.m. with the 200-meter dash prelims to follow at 5:05 p.m. Saturday’s finals are scheduled for 2:15 p.m. and 4:15 p.m., respectively.
