Central men’s tennis team drops nonconference meet

PELLA—The Central College men’s tennis team dropped a 6-3 nonconference decision against Grinnell College Saturday at Pella.

The Pioneers (14-3) swept the three doubles matches, all by one break of service, setting the tone for the rest of the meet.

“We played well, but Grinnell is a good team,” coach Steve Tyler said. “We played them tough in doubles and if a couple of those go our way it’s a different story. It was just one shot here and one shot there.”

The two teams split the six singles matches. Top Dutch player West Adelman (sophomore, Geneva, Ill.) won the first set 6-4, but needed a third-set super tiebreak (10-5) for the win over Cole Miller.

John Seier (senior, Waverly, Neb.) and BJ Cunningham (senior, Cedar Rapids, Kennedy HS) were straight-set winners at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively. Seier defeated Caleb Kumar 6-1, 6-4, while Cunningham topped Ameer Shujjah 6-0, 6-4, improving to 8-1 on the season.

“West, John and BJ are to be commended for their play,” said Tyler. “They really performed well in singles and those are the efforts we need.”

Grinnell won in straight sets at the three remaining singles positions to clinch the meet.

Next Central takes its spring trip to Missouri and Illinois for three nonconference meets. The Dutch visit Missouri Baptist March 15, Westminster (Mo.) March 17 and Principia (Ill.) March 18. Tyler said the trip will help prepare Central for the Iowa Conference schedule.

“We need to play some more matches,” Tyler said. “We’ll have our hands full in St. Louis, so we’ll need to keep improving.”
