Central’s Greenfield nets second honor

Men's basketball | Feb. 18, 2014

PELLA—Central College men’s basketball forward Matt Greenfield (senior, Huxley, Ballard HS) has been named to the Team of the Week for the second time this season after a pair of performances that propelled the Dutch into sole possession of first place in the Iowa Conference standings.

Greenfield averaged 27.0 points and 11.5 rebounds in two games for the week while shooting 41.7 percent (15-of-36) from the field, 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from 3-point range and converting on 19-of-21 free throw attempts. He is now averaging 18.9 points per game and 9.6 rebounds per game, second and first in the league, respectively. In conference-only games he is averaging a double-double, leading in both categories with 20.8 points per game and 10.3 rebounds per game.

In Saturday’s 80-74 road win over No. 23-ranked University of Dubuque (20-3 overall, 9-3 conference), Greenfield recorded his 10th double-double of the season, scoring 30 points, five less than his career high, and grabbing 14 rebounds. It was the second time this season he’s scored 30 points or more and the fourth time he’s hauled in 14 rebounds or more. The win pushed Central, the team that was picked for last place in the preseason poll, to the top of the conference with two league games remaining.

Earlier in the week, Greenfield scored 24 points on 7-of-14 shooting and tallied nine rebounds in a 92-78 home win over Buena Vista University (11-12 overall, 6-6 conference). He filled the stat sheet with career highs in blocked shots (6) and assists (5). Greenfield was one of three Dutch players to score 20-plus points in the same game—forward Colby Taylor (freshman, Creston) and guard Kevin Kaerwer (senior, El Paso, Texas, John L. Chapin HS) scored 22 and 21 points, respectively—the second such occurrence this season. He also added two of Central’s school-record-tying 13 made 3-pointers (13-of-21) in a single half.

It’s Greenfield’s second career honor.

The Iowa Conference accounted for three of the five honorees on this week’s team. Guard Andrew Wirth of Coe College and forward Nathaniel Smith of Loras College joined Greenfield, along with guard Delonte’ Joyce of Bethany College (W.Va.) and center David Langan of Wesley College (Del.).

The Team of the Week presented by Scoutware is’s weekly honor roll, recognizing the top performances from the previous week.

Central (17-6 overall, 10-2 conference) ventures to Decorah for Wednesday’s 8 p.m. conference matchup with Luther College (15-8 overall, 7-5 conference). The Dutch escaped the Norse at Pella 84-82 in their league opener Jan. 8.
