11 NCAA Div. III individual championships
MONMOUTH, ILL.—The Central College track and field teams notched a handful of top-five finishes at the Fighting Scots Indoor Invitational hosted by Monmouth (Ill.) College Saturday.
No team scores were kept, but there was a plethora of competitors.
Phipps sets the pace again—Middle distance runner Elin Phipps (sophomore, Boone) was tops in the 800-meter run in 2:17.54, setting the pace by more than one second. Phipps was also part of the Central’s 4x400 meter relay team with Camie Kibbee (junior, Mason City), Taylor Beckman (junior, Panora, Panorama HS), and Davis, which was runner-up in 4:05.45, .15 seconds back of first. It was the best time by any Dutch 4x400 squad this season.
Sprinter Abi Davis (sophomore, Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS) finished second in the 60-meter dash in 7.80 seconds, a personal record. Davis was also third in the 200-meter dash in 26.34.
Thrower Lorell Stuht (freshman, Loveland, Colo.) tossed the weight 48-0.5, a personal best by more than eight feet, for a fourth-place finish.
The Dutch are scheduled to compete in a pair of competitions Friday. Central will send athletes to both the Nebraska Tune-Up at Lincoln, Neb. and the Iowa Invitational at Iowa City. Meet times are set for 12:30 and 4:30 p.m., respectively.
Dutch distance in front—Distance runner Isaac Steffensmeier (freshman, St. Paul, Fort Madison HS) finished runner-up in the mile run in 4:25.64, less than two seconds off the pace. Fellow distance runner Jamie Vander Veer (junior, Knoxville) placed fourth in the 800-meter run in 1:56.68.
Thrower Steven Messerschmidt (senior, Neola, Tri-Center HS) was third in the shot put with a mark of 49-7.75. He was also third in the weight throw with a mark of 54-6.
Hurdler Dan Roemerman (sophomore, Iowa City, City High HS) placed fifth in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.65.
Central’s 4x400-meter relay team of Mason Zimmerman (junior, Urbandale), Austin Roberts (sophomore, Bloomfield, Davis HS), Mitch Wagoner (senior, Iowa Falls, Iowa Falls-Alden HS) and Spencer Hammack (sophomore, Ottumwa) finished fifth in 3:28.95.
