PELLA—The Central College men’s track and field team jumped seven spots from its preseason ranking to No. 9 in the Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III indoor national poll.

The Dutch opened the season at No. 16, but moved up on the heels of their 19-point win at the season-opening 10-team Dutch Athletics Classic Saturday.

Senior distance runner Austin O’Brien (Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) won the 3,000-meter run and was named Iowa Conference men’s indoor track performer of the week, while junior multi-eventer Eric Larson (Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) and senior thrower Steven Messerschmidt (Neola, Tri-Center HS) won the 55-meter hurdles and weight throw, respectively.

The top five remained intact, led by 2013 indoor national champion Wis.-La Crosse. Wis.-Eau Claire and Mount Union swapped positions at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, followed by Wis.-Whitewater and Wis.-Oshkosh. Haverford (Pa.) moved up 12 spots to No. 6, followed by Illinois schools North Central and Monmouth. Bates (Maine) rounded out the top 10. Wartburg is the only other league school in the top 25, dropping one spot to No. 14.

Central continues its seven straight weekends of competition at Waverly in the Wartburg Select meet Friday and Saturday.
