MONTERREY, MEXICO—Nine Central College players, led by Iowa Conference football defensive MVP Danny Samson (Baxter, CMB HS) (pictured left, #54), and staff members are enduring sunshine and two-a-day workouts on the Tec de Monterrey campus as they prepare for Saturday’s fifth annual Tazon de Estrellas (Bowl of the Stars).

Samson, a 5-11, 255-pound defensive end, Mike Young (Country Club Hills, Ill., Hillcrest HS), a 5-11, 185-pound linebacker, Travis Hook (Grundy Center), a 6-4, 270-pound offensive lineman and Jason Breon (Anamosa), a 5-10, 175-pound defensive back are competing for Team Stars and Stripes, a squad of Division III players from 27 U.S. colleges who will compete against a Mexican all-star team. Game time is 1 p.m. Saturday.

The U.S. team also enjoyed a day with area youth, including painting, pick-up football and classroom learning.

A Spanish-language webcast of the game can be accessed at www.Terra.com.mx. A live stream of Saturday’s competition can also be accessed at http://deportes.terra.com.mx/en-vivo/19870. Both the webcast and live stream are free of charge.

Central defensive coordinator Don De Waard is serving as the U.S. team's head coach, while athletic training education program director John Roslien is the player personnel director. In addition, Frank Neu is the head athletic trainer, while Paden Kleinhesselink (senior, Sioux Center) and Chris Lobberecht (senior, Fort Madison) are athletic training students and equipment managers.

Formal practices conclude Wednesday, allowing players to take part in a community service project and tour the local area for the remainder of the week.
