Horton wins mile at Cyclone Holiday Preview

AMES—Eli Horton (junior, Runnells, Southeast Polk HS) won the mile run by less than one second as the Central College men’s and women’s track and field teams sent a handful of athletes to the Cyclone Holiday Preview hosted by Iowa State.

Horton finished the mile in 4:19.35, 0:00.49 ahead of second place and more than two seconds ahead of any other runner. Steven Messerschmidt (junior, Neola, Tri-Center HS) posted the third-best mark in the shot put and the sixth-best in the weight throw with tosses of 14.85 meters and 15.35 meters, respectively. Grady Carson (junior, Centerville) ran in the 60-meter dash and posted a preliminary time of 7.53.

Camie Kibbee (junior, Mason City) was the lone representative from the women’s squad and finished 16th in the 300-meter dash with a time of 43.51. She also competed in the 60-meter dash with a preliminary time of 8.44.

The indoor track and field season officially begins for the complete rosters at the Dutch Athletics Classic Jan. 24-25 at Pella.
