Seven national top-10 team finishes
PELLA—Central College junior Daniel Page (Tumwater, Wash.) retained the No. 5 spot at 125 pounds in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III rankings.
Page opened the season with a 4-0 undefeated weekend at the Knox (Ill.) Invitational Saturday. After opening the day with a major decision and decision, Page—seeded No. 1 at the invitational—won by fall over No. 4-seeded Slade Stiles (Buena Vista) and secured the title with a 12-3 major decision over No. 2-seeded Jimmy Panozzo (Augustana).
He was one of Central’s three individual champions and 12 top-six placewinners at the invitational.
An NCAA Division III tournament qualifier last season, Page was the lone Iowa Conference wrestler ranked in the preseason at 125 pounds, but was joined by Luther’s Nick Scheffert at No. 10 in the most recent rankings. Page is the only ranked Dutch wrestler.
Four Iowa Conference schools are in the second team rankings. Defending champion Wartburg remains the top-ranked team and has seven individually-ranked wrestlers. Luther is No. 4 and Coe is No. 8—both the same as the preseason poll—while Loras dropped eight spots to No. 24. Dubuque dropped out of the rankings after opening the season at No. 25.
The Dutch return to the mat Saturday at the Harold Nichols Open hosted by Iowa State. Start time is 9 a.m. at Ames.
