Four NCAA Div. III championships
PELLA — Central College landed nine players on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s All-America Scholar-Athlete softball 2013 squad announced Monday, the 17th-highest total of any NCAA Division III school.
The Dutch ranked second in Division III in 2010 and 2011 and tied for 12th in 2012.
The Scholar-Athlete distinction is given to any player with a 3.50 GPA or higher during the last academic year. Central had 10 honorees a year ago.
Outfielder Emily Te Brink, a senior last spring, was honored for the third straight year, as were outfielder Lexi Cessna, second baseman Chelsea Greiner, pitcher Brie Haycraft and outfielder Jordan Overland. Outfielder Heidi Reburn and catcher Dana Van Renterghem were named for the second time. Pitcher Trisha Smith and third baseman Whitney Sowers were also cited.
Haycraft topped the chart for the Dutch, posting a perfect 4.0 grade point average in 2012-13. Overland, who received the Elite 89 Award for having the highest GPA of any player in the NCAA Division III Softball Championship finals last May, has the squad’s best cumulative average at 3.97, which is also the mark she posted for 2012-13.
The Dutch posted a 32-10 record last spring, making their 25th NCAA tournament appearance and earning a berth in the national finals, tying for seventh.
