32 Iowa Conference titles
COLUMBUS, OHIO-The Central College men’s golf team remained in 10th place at the prestigious 12-team Gordin Division III Classic after Tuesday’s final round.
The No. 20-rated Dutch followed Monday’s 611, 36-hole performance with 303 at the par-72 Columbus Country Club for 310-301-303--914.
Junior David Watson (San Diego, Calif., Patrick Henry HS) was the top Dutch finisher with 74-74-75--223, tying for 22nd. Junior Desmond Stoll (Lockport, N.Y.) shot 77-74-76--227 and Jon Prescott (Mendota, Ill.) shot 78-76-73--227, tying for 33rd. Senior Jacob Anderson (Treynor) carded 82-77-79--238, tying with junior Clayton Curwin (Faribault, Minn., Shattuck St. Mary’s HS) for 56th, who carded 81-78-79--238.
“We have seen better days,” coach Chad Green said. “You cannot keep high scores in any tournament, much less the Gordin Classic. We learned a lot from this tournament. We know what we need to work on and we will take the time to prepare. Now that we have seen top-level opponents, hopefully we are hungry to improve and start competing for trophies.”
No. 9 ranked Wittenberg (Ohio) came from six strokes back after round two to win the title by 13 strokes with 295-287-281--863. No. 13 St. John Fisher (N.Y.), the day one leader, finished second with 285-291-300--876. John Chaney of Wittenberg won individual medalist honors by one stroke after carding a four-under par 68 in the final round for 73-71-68--212.
Central canceled its previously scheduled participation at the Illinois-Springfield Invitational Saturday and Sunday and will close out the fall season at the Edward Jones William Penn Invitational Oct. 11-12.
