Central hosts conference men’s tennis tournament

PELLA-Central College hosted the Iowa Conference men’s tennis individual tournament this weekend and two Dutch singles players and two doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals.

John Seier (senior, Waverly, Neb.), seeded No. 6 in Flight B, defeated Brandon Hornbeck of Wartburg in the second round, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4. Seier was ousted by No. 3 seed Sam Buffington of Luther in the quarterfinals.

Trevor Sensor (sophomore, Sterling, Ill.) matched Seier’s performance in Flight C, defeating Duy Nguyen of Dubuque 6-2, 6-0 in the second round before being knocked out by Coe’s Matt Moore in the quarterfinals.

The Dutch advanced one doubles teams to the quarterfinals in Flight A. West Adelman (sophomore, Geneva, Ill.) and Tim Kahl (junior, Grinnell) eased through the second round with an 8-1 win over Bellio and Goins of Luther. The duo was eliminated by No. 4 seed Karki and Appel of Luther in the quarters. Seier teamed up with Josh Forst (junior, Woodridge, Ill., Downers Grove South HS) for an 8-1 win over Buzzard and Shade of Buena Vista in the first round, but the Dutch team lost in the second to Damisch and Starkenburg of Coe.

In Flight B, BJ Cunningham (senior, Cedar Rapids, Kennedy HS) and Rick Williamson (junior, Pella) advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-4 win over Tucker and O’Brien of Loras, but was bested by top-seeded Woolf and Leovic of Coe.

Competition concludes on Saturday with semifinals, finals and third-place matches for all flights.
