Dutch women’s tennis team comes back to beat Grand View 5-4

Women's tennis | Sept. 13, 2013

DES MOINES-The Central College women’s tennis team came back after losing two doubles matches to beat Grand View 5-4 on Friday night.

The Dutch fell behind after Grand View (0-1) won at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Anna Bowser (sophomore, Fort Dodge) and Ashlyn Huegel (junior, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) tallied the team point at No. 2 by way of an injury default.

Central needed to win four of six singles matches and that is exactly what happened. The Dutch won four matches in straight sets, but needed a first-set tiebreaker and an extra game in the second set of one match to clinch the meet.

Angie Allgood (sophomore, Muscatine) surrendered the second-least amount of games with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1. Bowser was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at No. 2. Huegel needed the extra points for a 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 win at No. 4. Bowser and Huegel remain undefeated on the season, both as a doubles team and as singles players, at 5-0. Katie Todd (sophomore, Cedar Falls) lost the least amount of games and closed out the scoring with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6.

In a battle of undefeated teams, Central (5-0) travels to Cedar Rapids for a conference battle with Coe (5-0) on Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. The Kohawks defeated the Dutch twice last year, once in the fall and once in the spring.
