11 NCAA Div. III national team championships
PELLA-Two Central College athletes have been named Iowa Conference performers of the week. Austin O’Brien (senior, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) was named the men’s cross country runner of the week following a first-place finish at the Central Dutch Invitational and Megan Davis (sophomore, Highlands Ranch, Colo., Valor Christian HS) was the women’s tennis player of the week.
O’Brien led the pack with a finishing time of 26 minutes, 19.9 seconds in the men’s 8,000-meter run, winning by more than 10 seconds. Central, ranked first in the NCAA Division III Central Region, placed three runners in the top five and seven in the top 30 of the 97-runner field and finished second.
It is the first career runner of the week award for O’Brien, a team co-captain who received all-Central Region distinction in 2012.
O’Brien and the Dutch travel to Northfield, Minn. for the St. Olaf Invitational Sept. 21.
Perfect weekend for Davis--Davis won two singles matches at No. 2 and two doubles matches at No. 1 in a league sweep of the University of Dubuque and Loras College. Davis won both singles matches in straight sets (6-3, 6-3 and 6-2, 6-3) and teamed up with Angie Allgood (sophomore, Muscatine) for an 8-3 win the morning and an 8-2 win the afternoon. Davis holds 4-0 records in both singles and doubles this season.
It is the first career player of the week award for Davis. Central (4-0) visits non-conference foe Grand View Friday and Iowa Conference opponent Coe Saturday.
