DUBUQUE-The Central College women’s tennis team swept Dubuque in the morning before notching an 8-1 win over Loras in the afternoon.

Central dominated morning doubles against the Spartans (3-3), as no team lost more than three games. Sophomores Angie Allgood (Muscatine) and Megan Davis (Highlands Ranch, Colo., Valor Christian HS), won 8-3 at No. 1. Anna Bowser (sophomore, Fort Dodge) and Ashlyn Huegel (junior, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) won 8-2 at No. 2, as did Sarah Montgomery (junior, Bettendorf) and Katie Todd (sophomore, Cedar Falls) at No. 3.

Allgood was one of four straight-set winners for the Dutch with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1. Classmate Davis won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2. Montgomery surrendered the fewest games in a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5, while Todd won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6. Bowser and Huegel both needed third-set super tiebreakers to complete the sweep of Dubuque. Bowser won 6-3, 3-6, 10-2 at No. 3, while Huegel won 6-7, 6-2, 10-6 at No. 4.

“We played really well against Dubuque all over the roster,” coach Steve Tyler said. “Dubuque is an improved team, but we came out ready to play. It was a really nice team effort. When we sweep doubles it takes all the pressure off and we can go out there much more confident and relaxed in singles.”

The Dutch completed the weekend sweep in the afternoon at Loras (2-4). Central once again swept the three doubles matches before winning five of six singles matches. The lone setback was at No. 1 singles.

“It was more of the same against Loras,” Tyler said. “They are a very good team. We ran through the doubles, which was great. Bowser and Todd won the first two singles matches to clinch the meet. We played really well today.

“The team is feeling good. We are happy and confident. It has been a great start to the season.”

The Dutch (4-0) return to the courts next weekend. Central visits non-conference foe Grand View on Friday and Iowa Conference opponent Coe on Saturday.
