Central bids for national meet berths

LA CROSSE, WIS.—The Central College mens’s and women’s track and field squads competed at the Wis. La Crosse Qualifier Thursday and came away with several personal best performances.

Josh Fleming (senior, Caseyville, Ill., Collinsville HS) scored a big lifetime best in the hammer throw with a toss of 178 feet, six inches to place 12th and also took runner-up honors in the discus throw with a mark of 162-4. Kyle Nuehring (freshman, Waukee) crossed the line in 1:53.36 in the 800 meters to place eighth while the 4x400-meter relay team of Mason Zimmerman (sophomore, Urbandale)Austin Roberts (freshman, Bloomfield, Davis County HS)Tyler Westphal (senior, Le Mars), and Spencer Hammack (freshman, Ottumwa) was fifth in the 3:20.24.

On the women’s side, Elin Phipps (freshman, Boone) was 14th in the 800 meters with a personal-best mark of 2:15.52 and the 4x100-meter relay of Monica Ruiz (freshman, Hudson)Katie Sunderman (freshman, Pella)Felicia Coleman (senior, Houston, Texas, J. Frank Dobie HS), and McKenna Zimmerman (sophomore, Urbandale) was seventh in the 48.66.

The Dutch will resume competition tomorrow at the North Central (Ill.) Gregory Invitational. Field events begin at 2 p.m. with running events starting at 4 p.m.
