Central among five in regional in NFCA softball rankings

PELLA — Central College is among five schools assigned to the NCAA Division III Pella Regional to land in this week’s NFCA coaches’ poll.

The Dutch (28-8) dropped four spots to No. 16 after losing 9-3 to eventual champ Luther in the Iowa Conference tournament Sunday in Cedar Rapids. Central is seeded second in the eight-team regional, opening Thursday at 4 p.m. at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex field. St. Thomas (Minn.) is the top seed and moved up a spot to No. 8 in the poll with a 38-5 record. Fourth-seeded Coe (32-6) is No. 12, third-seeded Fontbonne (Mo.) (33-10) is No. 23 and sixth-seeded Augustana (Ill.) (29-12) is No. 25. Fifth-seeded Washington-St. Louis (Mo.) (30-12) is among those receiving votes. Luther (28-9), which competes in the Whitewater (Wis.) Regional, moved back into the rankings at No. 18 after a week’s absence.
