STORM LAKE—The Central College men’s tennis team scored a decisive 8-1 win against Buena Vista University Saturday and extended its winning streak to four matches.

The Dutch (11-4 overall, 3-1 Iowa Conference) won the No. 1-5 singles matches and swept the doubles competition. Buena Vista dropped to 7-5 overall and 3-2 in league play.

“Buena Vista is a team that is a lot better than they have been in the past,” said coach Steve Tyler. “We knew we’d have to come out and play well. The cold weather was a factor, but our players were committed to being prepared and knew how to play in it.”

Kyle Freischlag (junior, Downers Grove, Ill., Downers Grove South HS) won at the No. 1 singles spot 7-6 (4-0), 6-1 and teamed with West Adelman (freshman, Geneva, Ill.) to take No. 1 doubles 8-6.

“Kyle is rounding into form,” said Tyler. “His knee is better and he played better in doubles. It’s good having him and West to lead us at the top of the lineup.”

John Seier (junior, Waverly, Neb,) and Tim Kahl (sophomore, Grinnell) won a tight match at No. 2 doubles (9-8), with John Forst (sophomore, Woodridge, Ill., Downers Grove South HS) and Zane Hendricks (junior, Fort Dodge) winning 8-6 at the No. 3 spot.

“We were pretty tenacious in doubles,” said Tyler. “We were down 5-2 at No. 1 and came back to get the win.”

Central travels to Decorah next Saturday for a 9 a.m. conference matchup against Luther College. The Norse are 7-9 overall with a 1-1 mark against league opponents.

“Luther has gradated a couple players and has lost more matches than they are accustomed to,” said Tyler. “But they’ve also beefed up their schedule with teams that are nationally ranked. They are not to be taken lightly.”
