Four NCAA Div. III championships
PELLA—For the third straight year, Central College is among eight schools selected to serve as regional sites for the NCAA Division III softball tournament.
On Sunday, May 5, 62 teams will be selected for the championship and assigned to regional sites. Eight teams will compete at seven of the regional sites and six teams will compete at one site. The eight-team regionals will be staged May 9-13 and the six-team regional will be held May 10-13. The tourneys use a double-elimination format.
The other regional hosts are Ithaca College (N.Y.), Montclair State University (N.J.), Roanoke College (Va.), Trine University (Ind.), the University of Texas-Tyler and the University of Wis.-Whitewater. The eighth regional site is to be announced. Central and Texas-Tyler are the only schools that also served as hosts in 2011 and 2012.
The eight regional champions advance to the national finals May 17-21 at Eau Claire, Wis.
Central’s A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex field will serve as a regional host site regardless of whether or not the Dutch make the team tournament field. Central, 20-5 overall, is riding an 11-game winning streak and is No. 17 in the NFCA Division III rankings. The Dutch have made NCAA tourney appearances the past four years, with 24 NCAA berths overall. Central finished fourth in the regional tournament last year.
It’s the 10th time that Central has hosted a softball regional. The NCAA Division III finals were staged at Central in 1992.
