Central up to No. 17 in softball poll

Softball | April 10, 2013

PELLA — Riding an 11-game winning streak, the Central College softball team moved up four spots in the NFCA Division III Top 25 Poll.

Winners of 19 of its last 20 games, Central, 20-5, rose to No. 17. Undefeated Montclair State (N.J.) remains a unanimous choice for No. 1 with a 20-0 mark. Emory (Ga.) (37-1) is second with Texas-Tyler (28-2) third. Iowa Conference rival Luther (14-4) is again No. 9 while Coe (21-3) is still No. 15. The two teams split a doubleheader Sunday in Cedar Rapids. Simpson, which was No. 12 last week but swept by Central Wednesday in Indianola, dropped out of the rankings.

Central is still waiting to play its home season opener, after some weather-related postponements. A conference doubleheader with Buena Vista, originally slated for Tuesday in Pella, has not yet been rescheduled. The Dutch are also set to play on their home field in the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex Saturday in a league doubleheader with Dubuque, starting at 2 p.m.

It’s Central Softball Alumni Day, highlighted this year by anniversary reunions of three of the school’s four NCAA Division III championship teams. It will be the 25th anniversary celebration for the 1988 title-winners, the 20th anniversary for the 1993 squad and the 10th anniversary for the 2003 team. Returning players from those clubs will be recognized between games and at a team barbeque in H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse following the doubleheader.
