Central’s Meyer honored by league

Softball | April 9, 2013

PELLA—Central College senior catcher Caitlyn Meyer (Newton) has been named the Iowa Conference female athlete of the week.

Meanwhile, senior Felicia Coleman (Houston, Texas, J. Frank Dobie HS) was cited as the track events athlete of the week for women’s outdoor track and field.

Recognized as the softball position player of the week, Meyer batted .667 in four games during the week and helped extend Central’s win streak to 11. She posted a 1.333 slugging percentage and had 10 hits in 15 at-bats with three home runs, a double, three runs scored and eight RBIs.

Meyer’s seventh-inning home run shot against No. 12 Simpson Wednesday led to a 6-5 (11 inn.) win before a 4-4 effort in the nightcap helped the No. 21 Dutch notch a 12-3 (5 inn.) victory. Meyer’s second home run blast of the week broke a tie in the eighth inning for a 5-3 triumph against Loras Sunday. She drove in three runs in the second game as Central rolled up a 9-1 (6 inn.) victory and improved to 20-5 overall with a 4-0 league mark.

Coleman won three events Saturday at the Washington University (Mo.) Select Meet. She captured the 100 meters in a convincing 12.14 seconds, before claiming the 200 meters in 22.74 seconds. Coleman’s 100-meter mark ranks fourth in Division III while the 200-meter time is third. She also ran the third leg of the winning 4x100 relay (49.17) and helped the Dutch finish third in the nine-team field.

It’s the third time Coleman has been recognized in the outdoor season. She was cited twice in 2011. Coleman, a three-time all-American, is a four-time indoor track events athlete of the week and two-time female athlete of the week.
