30 Iowa Conference titles
NORMAL, ILL.—Justin Livingston (senior, Winterset) shot 2-under-par at the 26-team Illinois Wesleyan Invitational to push the Central College men’s golf team into ninth place after the first round Friday.
“We shot a below-average day,” said coach Chad Green. “We didn’t hit the ball too well. We just need to get the ball off the tee better.”
Playing at the par-72 Ironwood Golf Course, the Dutch shot 304, just one shot behind No. 5 Nebraska Wesleyan and six shots behind No. 3 Illinois Wesleyan. No. 15 Wittenberg University (Ohio) sits in first place, 11 shots ahead of the Dutch. The only other Iowa Conference team in the tourney, Dubuque, is in 18th place at 316.
Livingston had two bogeys on the front nine, but fired a 35 on the back nine to finish at 76. He is tied for 13th place in the individual standings. Bryan Laraia (junior, Ankeny) started the front nine with a 36, but only shot a 40 on the back nine, tallying a 76 and tying for 33rd.
“Justin played really well in the back stretch and had an even 16 holes,” Green said. “Bryan was the opposite and started out great on the front, but he ran into trouble on the backside. They both played decent today.”
The remaining Dutch players tied. David Watson (sophomore, San Diego, Calif., Patrick Henry HS), Jon Prescott (sophomore, Mendota, Ill.) and Desmond Stoll (sophomore, Lockport, N.Y.) each shot 77 and are tied for 42nd.
“Tomorrow will be a totally different day,” said Green. “We need to figure out how to put up a better score, especially with predicted high winds. It’s going to be a tough day, but if we can hit the ball a little better, we can do well.”
The final round of the Illinois Wesleyan tourney concludes Saturday.
