MOUNT VERNON—The Central College men’s tennis team ended a two-match skid by defeating Cornell College 6-3 Thursday.

After the Dutch (8-4) swept the Rams (10-3) in doubles sets, coach Steve Tyler saw improvement in the squad after losing its two previous matches.

“We came out and played really well in doubles,” said Tyler. “It was great to have those wins right at the start especially after the last two matches.”

Kyle Freischlag (junior, Downers Grove, Ill., Downers Grove South HS) and West Adelman (freshman, Geneva, Ill.) wrapped up an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2, John Seier (junior, Waverly, Neb.) and Tim Kahl (sophomore, Grinnell) pulled out a decisive 8-2 victory and Josh Forst (sophomore, Woodridge, Ill., Downers Grove South HS) and Zane Hendricks (junior, Fort Dodge) won 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.

The middle of the singles lineup dominated the court. At No. 3 singles, Collin Schares (sophomore, Johnston) won 6-4, 6-3. Kahl battled at No. 4 singles and went to a 10-point breaker set winning 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 and Hendricks rallied for the No. 5 singles win, coming out on top 7-6 (7-4), 7-5.

“Collin had a great win,” Tyler said. “Tim and Zane had some close matches but really were able to play well and pull out the win.”

The squad will face off against two conference opponents Saturday. Central is set to play Loras College (0-8) at 9 a.m. and University of Dubuque (3-11) at 1p.m. at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex.

“This is a nice win for us to come off of,” said Tyler. “For the past few years, Cornell has been giving us some trouble, but it was great to walk out of there with a win.”
