Men’s tennis team stumbles against Coe

Men's tennis | March 23, 2013

CEDAR RAPIDS— The Central College men’s tennis squad couldn’t stop Iowa Conference leader and undefeated Coe College Saturday as the Kohawks escaped the Dutch 8-1.

“Coe outplayed us today,” said coach Steve Tyler. “They served and returned the ball better and kept more balls in play.”

Pat Daly (senior, Shawnee, Kan., Shawnee Mission NW HS) narrowly captured the lone Dutch victory in a breaker set at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 2-6, 10-8.

“Pat played well and battled after splitting his sets,” Tyler said.

Despite the team loss, Tyler said that there were sparks of potential throughout the singles matches. He highlighted Kyle Freischlag (junior, Downers Grove, Ill., Downers Grove South HS) and Zane Hendricks (junior, Fort Dodge). Freischlag lost at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-4 and Hendricks split sets at No. 5 before dropping the breaker, 4-6, 6-1, 10-8.

“Kyle played tough at No. 1 after coming off an injury and Zane fought for that last breaker set, but just couldn’t close it out,” said Tyler.

The loss drops Central to 7-4 while Coe went to 19-0. For its next match up, Central will travel to Mount Vernon April 4 and play Cornell College at 3:30 p.m.

“We played okay, but to beat a team of Coe’s quality we have to be on the top of our game,” Tyler said. “We are capable of playing better than we did today. I know we can win in the conference. We just need to learn to execute.”
