Central’s Jacobsma to lead women’s basketball squad in Italy

Women's basketball | March 12, 2013

PELLA—Central College’s Mike Jacobsma has been named head coach of Team Stars for the Italy women’s basketball tour May 24-June 3.

The tour is organized by American International Sports Teams (AIST).

Jacobsma, in his second year at Central, will lead Team Stars in four or five exhibition games against Italian club teams. The 10-player roster invited on tour is comprised of student-athletes from NCAA Divisions II and III.

“I am thrilled to have been selected to coach a team representing the USA in Italy,” Jacobsma said. “I’m excited about the prospect of working with some of the top Div. II and Div. III athletes this summer while also growing professionally and learning from other coaches in Italy.”

A men’s squad and second women’s team will join Team Stars on tour, which makes stops in Rome, Florence, San Marino, Milan and Como. Along with guided city tours of Florence, San Marino and Milan, the squads will visit Vatican City and museum, Rimini Beach and possibly take a cruise to Bellagio.

Rebuilding Central into a championship program, Jacobsma guided the Dutch to a 10-15 season, the most wins for the women's program since 2003-04. Two players received honorable mention for the all-conference squad.
