Central league soccer tournament pairings set

Women's soccer | Oct. 24, 2012

PELLA—Central College will open Iowa Conference soccer tournament play Saturday. The women will host Simpson College at 1 p.m. at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex soccer field in Pella while the men will face Luther College at 7 p.m. in Decorah.

The Dutch women (11-5-2) carry the No. 4 seed while Simpson (9-8) is seeded fifth. Saturday’s winner advances to meet top-seeded Loras College (15-4) at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Dubuque.

Central’s men (7-9-2) are seeded sixth while Luther (10-5-2) is the No. 3 seed. The winner will take on second-seeded University of Dubuque (11-5-1) Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Dubuque.

The single-elimination tournaments continue through Saturday, Nov. 3. The champions gain the league’s automatic berth in the NCAA Division III tournaments. The men’s and women’s fields will both be announced Nov. 5, with the women at 1 p.m. and the men at 1:30 p.m.

Women continue to climb—Central is making its second straight appearance in the league tournament after a three-year absence. The Dutch, who are 3-7 in tournament action, also faced Simpson in the opening-round last year and were defeated 1-0. When the two teams met earlier this season, Central notched a goal in the 5th minute and held on for a 1-0 victory.

The Dutch have been attacking the school record book all year. The squad posted a school-record six-game win streak from Sept. 12-22 and later tied the consecutive shutouts mark with three clean sheets against Simpson, Buena Vista and William Penn. The Dutch are one shutout away from the season record of eight. Central’s 11 wins is the second-highest win total in the program’s history. The most season victories was 12 in 1999.

Men riding wave of momentum—The Dutch locked up the last spot in the league tournament with a 6-0 rout against Coe College Tuesday. Central is 3-9-3 is tournament action and is making its 11th straight appearance and 12th overall. The Dutch advanced to the semifinals last year, upsetting Simpson 5-0 before falling to Loras 2-0. Central last met Luther in 2010 and knocked of the Norse 1-0. When the squads met earlier this season, Dutch forward Ralph Palmeri (senior, St. Charles, Ill., Marmion Academy) landed a corner kick into the top of the goal for 1-0 decision.

Central has posted four shutouts this year and four matches have either ended in a draw or been determined by one goal. Everyone is a threat for the Dutch as 12 different players have scored goals this season.
