Central's Bowser advances at individual tourney for women’s tennis

CEDAR RAPIDS — Although some members of the Central College women’s tennis squad finished the fall season Friday at the Iowa Conference individual tournament, Anna Bowser (freshman, Fort Dodge) is still set to compete Saturday after making it to the Flight B semifinal.

In flight A, Chelsea Johnson (senior, Mount Vernon) lost in the first round 7-5, 7-5 and Megan Davis (freshman, Denver, Colo., Valor Christian HS) dropped her first-round match 6-3, 6-3. After sitting out in a bye round, Angie Allgood (freshman, Muscatine) easily knocked out Luther College’s Megan Wachholz 6-3, 6-3, but lost in the quarterfinals to No. 1 seed Michelle Schupbach of Coe College 6-2, 6-2.

Bowser took on the competition in flight B and won in the preliminaries 8-2. She followed it up with another defeat in the first round against Hailey Johnson from Luther, 8-3. On a run, Bowser continued the streak with a 6-4, 7-6 second round win as well as a 6-2, 7-5 quarterfinal win against Luther’s Sarah Christopherson. Saturday, Bowser plays Lindsey Nash from Simpson College.

Amanda Kuhn (freshman, Glen Ellyn, Ill., Glenbard South HS) and Ashlyn Huegel (sophomore, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) won in the first round of flight B 8-4 and 8-6, respectively. Huegel battled in the second match but fell 5-7, 6-1 (10-7) to Britta Jensen from Wartburg College.  Kuhn tallied another win 7-5, 6-0 but dropped her final match in the quarterfinals 7-5, 6-1.

Allgood and Davis competed in the doubles flight A, and after a first-round bye, lost in the quarterfinals 8-3.

The Dutch finish the fall season at 8-4 overall with a 3-4 mark against conference opponents.
