Central fourth in Minnesota men’s golf tourney

Men's golf | Sept. 30, 2012

RAMSEY, MINN.—Central College slipped a notch to fourth place after two rounds of the 54-hole Twin Cities Classic men’s golf tournament Sunday.

Central carded a 301 at the Links at North Fork in Ramsey, Minn., after a 291 Saturday at the Elk River Golf Club. Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.), ranked No. 14 in the Golf World/Nike Golf Division III preseason poll, continues to lead the 17-team field at 289-289—578. Manitoba (Canada) is second at 290-297—587. No. 22 Nebraska Wesleyan climbed from fifth place to pass the Dutch for third at 296-293—589. No. 21 St. Thomas (Minn.) is one stroke behind Central at 300-293—593.

“Our goal is to be under 300 so a 301 isn’t bad considering we didn’t the ball as well as yesterday,” coach Chad Green said. “We putted well today and scrambled well, making good decisions on the next shot in order to get up and down.”

Iowa Conference foe Luther College is 11th at 300-310—610 while Wartburg College is 15th at 312-322—634 and Buena Vista University is 16th at 315-322—637.

Justin Livingston (senior, Winterset) shot a 1-over-par 73and is tied for third at 143 after posting a 70 Saturday. Desmond Stoll (sophomore, Lockport, N.Y.) is tied for 24th at 77-73—150 with Drew Osier (senior, Austin, Minn.) at 75-78—153. David Watson (sophomore, San Diego, Calif., Patrick Henry HS), who was tied for second Saturday, fell into a tie for 39th at 69-84—153. Mike Maller (junior, Davenport) shot 85-77—162. Adam Squires (sophomore, Waterloo, Columbus HS) competed as an individual and is tied for 39th at 74-79—153.

“Both Desmond and Mike started off poorly but came back to grind out scores that we ended up using,” Green said. “Desmond shot 40-33 and Maller had 41-36. It was good to see them battle back.”

Monday’s final round is held at the Wayzata Country Club.

“It’s a typical old-school Midwest course,” Green said. “It’ll be tight and we’ll have to put the ball in the right spots and hit the ball better than we did today.”

Meanwhile, Central’s second unit was in action at the Grand View Invitational held at the Tournament Club of Iowa in Polk City. The Dutch carded a 294 and was led by Jared Nepomuceno (freshman, Carona, Calif., Santiago HS) at 72. The 36-hole tourney concludes Monday.

Central’s third and fourth squads competed at the 18-hole MacMurry (Ill.) Invitational at the The Links Golf Club in Jacksonville, Ill. Jacob Anderson (junior, Treynor) took runner-up honors with 72.
