Central women’s golf squad moves to third in league tourney

Women's golf | Sept. 29, 2012

CEDAR FALLS—Central College improved to third place Saturday at the midpoint of the Iowa Conference women’s golf tourney.

The Dutch shot 331 on the par-72 Pheasant Ridge Golf Course to climb from fourth at 332-331—663. Wartburg College remains in first at 307-312—619 with Luther College second at 317-318—635. Loras College is fourth at 334-331—665 while Simpson College dropped from third to fifth at 328-347—675. Abby Potts of Loras and Kelsi Sawatzky of Wartburg lead the medalist race at 152.

“It was a good team effort today,” coach Tim Wilkinson said.

Kelsey Van Tasell (sophomore, Pella) and Ashley Smith (senior, Johnsburg, Ill.) each shot 80. Van Tasell is tied for sixth at 77-80—157 while Smith is 14th at 85-80—165.

“Kelsey and Ashley both put up good scores, even though Kelsey was a couple strokes higher than yesterday and Ashley had a tough day putting.”

Chelsey Shuey (freshman, Ames) is 19th at 87-86—173 and Emily Fisher (freshman, Wapello) is tied for 25th at 94-85—179. Taylor Hill (sophomore, Treynor) withdrew from the round.

“We needed the freshmen to come through and they both had good efforts with their best rounds of the year,” Wilkinson said.

The 72-hole tournament continues next Friday and Saturday with the final 36 holes at the Bos Landen Golf Club in Pella.

Wilkinson said the Dutch may not have much of a home-course advantage.

“All but Wartburg and Buena Vista have played our course at least once in the past year,” he said. “But it’ll be a different playing it in the league tournament.

“The players are looking forward to competing at home and are happy to be back in the last group with the top three teams. We’ll have a good week of practice and see what happens.”
