18 top-three league team finishes in past 31 years
PELLA — The Central College women’s tennis team dropped two matches against Wartburg College and Luther College Saturday, losing 7-2 and 8-1, respectively.
At Wartburg (6-3), No. 2 doubles team Anna Bowser (freshman, Fort Dodge) and Anna Striegel (sophomore, Cedar Rapids, Jefferson HS) won 9-7. The Dutch dropped the Nos. 1 and 3 doubles matches as well as five singles matches. Senior Chelsea Johnson (Mount Vernon) had two match points at No. 3 but fell 6-2, 3-6 (12-10). Bowser swept No. 6 singles 6-1, 6-2.
“Anna Bowser had a really nice day in singles and a great win in doubles,” said coach Steve Tyler. “These were two of the better teams in the league and we battled with them.”
Against Luther (10-1), Angie Allgood (freshman, Muscatine) and Megan Davis (freshman, Denver, Colo., Valley Christian HS) battled at No. 1 doubles but fell in the tiebreaker 8-9 (7-4). Bowser pulled out a third win at No. 5 singles 4-6, 7-5 (10-7).
“Today we learned that our doubles can play with anyone, we just came up short,” Tyler said. “We are a young team and we are learning what it means to compete in the Iowa Conference. I expect us to do well at the individual tournament next week.”
The Iowa Conference individual tournament is Oct. 5-6 at Cedar Rapids.
