Dutch players advance in league men's tennis meet

Men's tennis | Sept. 21, 2012

DECORAH — Three Central College players notched victories in the B singles flight of the rain-altered Iowa Conference individual men’s tennis tournament Friday.

However the Dutch came up empty in three A flight matches.

The tourney was delayed several hours by rain on the Luther College outdoor courts and most of the action took place indoors. Matches were shortened to eight-point pro sets.

Tim Kahl (sophomore, Grinnell) was the top seed in the B flight and opened with a pair of wins.

“Tim was down 5-2 and came back to win,” coach Steve Tyler said. “An eight-game pro set goes quite fast, so for him to turn it around and pull that off was pretty remarkable.”

John Seier (junior, Waverly, Neb.) and Josh Forst (sophomore, Woodridge, Ill., Downers Grove South HS) also notched wins. Central’s David Bouska (senior, Altoona, Southeast Polk HS) recorded two wins in the C flight. Complete results were not yet available.

But in the A flight, Central’s Wes Adelman (freshman, Grinnell), Collin Schares (sophomore, Johnston) and Kyle Freischlag (junior, Downers Grove, Ill., South HS) each dropped their opening matches. Adelman fell to Riley Galbraith of Coe, 8-2, Freischlag lost 9-7 to Demetrius Johnson of Dubuque and Schares was blanked 8-0 by No. 7 seeded Jeff Damisch of Coe.

It wasn’t the kind of early season showing Tyler was hoping for.

“It was disappointing,” he said. “Sitting around for 5 hours before you play is hard, but you still have to be ready. We just didn’t come out and compete as well as we’d hoped.”

Singles action will conclude Saturday, with doubles competition being staged as well.
