Three NCAA Div. III national titles
CEDAR RAPIDS—Unable to rally from early deficits, the Central College volleyball team suffered a disappointing Iowa Conference loss to Coe College Tuesday, 25-20, 25-15, 25-15.
Central (1-9 overall, 0-2 conference) hit .229 the first set but couldn’t find its offensive rhythm the rest of the night, hitting .043 and .032 in the second and third sets.
“We seemed to find a way to start every match behind four or five points,” coach Kent Clayberg said. “It just sets the tone for the game. We’ve got to find that spark a little bit earlier.”
Coe, last year’s league champions, hit an efficient .319 for the match and had nine team blocks.
“Give Coe credit, they came out and decided they wanted to win and they played as if they wanted to win,” Clayberg said. “They controlled the match.”
Outside hitter Tess Reinig (senior, Manchester, West Delaware HS) and middle hitter Ashley Pedersen (senior, Humboldt) led the Dutch with seven kills apiece.
Setter Claire Stewart (sophomore, Colorado Springs, Colo., Classical Academy) had 23 assists and dug 12 balls. Libero Tori Zempel (freshman, La Porte City, Union Community HS) tallied 18 digs.
“Tori played a very strong match defensively and certainly in reception she was very consistent,” Clayberg said.
The Dutch tackle Coe (8-6 overall, 2-0 conference) again Friday at the Grinnell College Invitational at 6 p.m. Central plays Grinnell and Rockford (Ill.) Saturday at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
“Playing Coe on Friday is exactly what we need,” Clayberg said. “We need to get a better account of ourselves. The team we could be is waiting there for us to discover.”
