Central women's tennis team blanks Buena Vista

FORT DODGE— The Central College women’s tennis teams scored its sixth win in seven outings, shutting out Buena Vista University 9-0 Tuesday.

The Dutch improved to 6-1 overall and 3-1 against Iowa Conference opponents, but had to overcome a few anxious moments in the opening doubles matches, as they fell behind in all three flights.

“We didn’t start very quickly,” coach Steve Tyler said. “But then we began to believe in our doubles play and came back in all three matches. Then we cruised.”

The Dutch captured all six singles matches in straight sets. Tyler cited Anna Striegel (sophomore, Cedar Rapids, Jefferson HS), who filled in at No. 2 doubles as the Dutch were without two players who have handled that position.

“Anna moved into that spot and really played well,” Tyler said. “I keep repeating myself, but getting those wins in doubles gives us so much more momentum.”

In singles, freshman Angie Allgood (Muscatine) was especially dominant, with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at No. 1.

“That just sends a message to the rest of the team that we’re in good shape,” Tyler said. “It’s very nice having Angie at the top of the lineup.”

The Dutch are home Saturday, taking on Morningside College at 9 a.m. and Grand View at 2 p.m. Central defeated Morningside 6-3 last year but didn’t play Grand View. Morningside is 2-2 while Grand View is 0-1.
