ELMHURST, ILL. — Surrendering a last-minute goal, the Central College men’s soccer team was shut out by Elmhurst College (Ill.) Saturday, 1-0. In the 89th minute, Elmhurst scored the game’s lone goal. Central (2-4-1) was outshot 20-11. Goalkeeper Travis Yets (junior, Bettendorf) had 11 saves.
“We were tired and lost concentration by the end of the game,” said coach Gary Laidlaw. “It was just long enough to let them put one in the net.”
Forward Jordan Appenzeller (senior, Boone) took four shots while senior midfielder Brandon Bautista (St. Charles, Ill., North HS) had three. Midfielders Matt Woodcock (senior, West Des Moines, Vally HS), Dennis Forrest (sophomore, Danville, Ill.) and Jacob Stein (junior, Prairie City, PCM HS) each had one.
“Dennis (Forrest) did very well offensively and defensively,” Laidlaw said. “Defensively, we have had two games in a row that were very solid. Every game we get better.
“Mark Hentschel (sophomore, West Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS), Gary Sorich (senior, Downers Grove, Ill., Lemont HS) and Jeremy Dolder (freshman, Iowa City, West HS) were great in the back as well.”
Saturday the Dutch play host to Luther (4-0-2) in their first Iowa Conference match of the year at 4 p.m. at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex field. Last season Central lost 2-0 to the Norse.
“We have to get ready for conference play,” said Laidlaw. “Good things have been happening this season and once we put it all together we are going to have great results. We remain optimistic on our chances in conference.”
