22-13-3 (.618) mark over past two seasons
OMAHA, NEB.—Central College built a two-goal lead and hung on for a 2-1 women’s soccer win at St. Mary (Neb.) Saturday.
Forward Alayna Bailey (junior, Des Moines, Hoover HS) netted a goal at 37:16 mark in the first half to put Central on the scoreboard, scoring off a pass from midfielder Gabbi Muse (sophomore, Waukee). The Dutch added some cushion with a second goal from midfielder Julie Wunder (junior, Muscatine) at 55:18.
The Dutch held off the Flames (2-6) until the 81st minute, when St. Mary scored on a scramble in the front of the box. Central was outshot 16-10.
“We finished our opportunities,” coach Mike Kobylinski said. “It was a workman-like effort against a tough team.”
Goalkeeper Steph Hasken (senior, Davenport, West HS) made eight saves, and defender Liz Daniels (sophomore, Oconomowoc, Wis.) led a solid backline.
“Steph made some outstanding saves in the second half,” Kobylinski said. “And Liz was our rock in the backline. She made some crucial clearances and one-on-one stops, which was infectious for the rest of our defenders. Our whole defense did great job again today.”
The Dutch (5-2) travel to Orange City Tuesday for a 4 p.m. matchup against Northwestern College. The Red Raiders were 2-2-1 going into Saturday's game at William Penn.
