Back-to-back Iowa Conference champions (2012, 2013)
PELLA— The Central College men’s cross country and track and field teams are hosting a Special Olympics Run Saturday at Ron and Joyce Schipper Stadium in Pella.
Members of the squads will be running continuously for 12 hours, beginning at 9 a.m. Runners and walkers from the community are welcomed to participate at any time and there will also be yard games, ultimate Frisbee and live music. The teams are accepting donations and will present a check to the Special Olympics at the West Central Area Spring Games at Indianola in April.
The idea for a Special Olympics Run started with a group of 16 sophomore and juniors searching for a common bond to live in one of the campus theme houses.
“We came up with the theme of community service,” said junior Michael Splavec (West Des Moines, Valley HS). “We felt strongly about Special Olympics and wanted to put something on for that organization and since we’re all runners, we decided to do something that involved running.”
The miles will add up after 12 hours.
“We’ll have two runners from the house going the whole time, so we’ll each run between 10-20 miles,” Splavec said. “It's going to be a cool way to do something for the Special Olympics.”
