Central’s Hill captures own golf tourney crown

PELLA— Sophomore Taylor Hill (Treynor) coasted to a 15-stroke victory in the medalist race at the Central College Fall Invitational women’s golf tourney Saturday.

Hill turned in the low score each day, carding 75-78—153 at the par-72 Bos Landen GC. She led the Dutch to second place in the six-team field at 345-351—696. Grinnell College won the team title, rallying from Friday’s second-place round to edge the Dutch by five shots at 349-342—691. Loras College was third at 351-377—728.

Senior Ashley Smith (Johnsburg, Ill.) finished tied for fourth at 86-83—169 and Kelsey Van Tasell (sophomore, Pella) was 15th at 90-95—185. Chelsey Shuey (freshman, Ames) was 18th at 94-95—189 and Emily Fisher (freshman, Wapello) tied for 19th at 95-95—190.

Playing as individuals, Nichole Malott (freshman, Tipton) shot 108-99—207 and Jill Huffman (freshman, Bloomington, Ill., Normal HS) carded 109-103—212. Rachel Cassens (freshman, Stockton, Ill.) had 111-102—213 and Caitlin Spurlin (sophomore, Tama, GMG HS) shot 126-153—279.

The Dutch travel to Normal, Ill., next weekend for the 36-hole Illinois Wesleyan Fall Invitational. They tourney tees off at 9 a.m. both Friday and Saturday at the Ironwood Golf Course.
