PELLA —With a slow start in its first two games, the Central College men’s soccer team secured its first season win against Augustana College (Ill.) defeating the Vikings 5-2 Friday.
"I’ve been very happy with how we have played, so it was nice to get a win,” said coach Garry Laidlaw. “Augustana is a good team in a good conference. I was pleased that we put five in the net.”
Central (1-1-1) had a strong start to the game when forward Jordan Appenzeller (senior, Boone) scored the first goal in the sixth minute. The Dutch led at the half, 3-1. Laidlaw credits the entire team for bringing the win home.
“I thought we managed the weather conditions really well and overall we were more intelligent on the field.”
Laidlaw cited forward Nick Hauenstein (sophomore, Nevada), who scored in the 30th minute, and midfielder Daniel Peacock (junior, Ankeny) for exceptional efforts.
“Nick brought good energy from the bench tonight, and Dan had a really solid game in the middle of the park,” he said.
Midfielder Brandon Bautista (senior, St. Charles, Ill., North HS) responded quickly to a first-half Viking goal, placing an unassisted goal in the net four minutes later in the 16th minute. The momentum kept coming when Matt Woodcock (senior, West Des Moines, Valley HS) scored at the beginning of the second period. The final goal of the night came from Serge Sievertson (sophomore, Wilmette, Ill., New Trier Township HS) in the 72nd minute.
“We still need to tighten up our defense a bit, but once again, we got to utilize a lot of the squad tonight,” Laidlaw said.
The Dutch head back to the pitch Friday night taking on Millikin (Ill.) at 5 p.m. at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex soccer field.
