2016 NCAA Div. III tournament qualifier
PELLA — Mike Boschee is the new head men’s basketball coach at Bemidji State University (Minn.), leaving Central College after nine seasons.
At Central, Boschee inherited a squad that hadn’t reached the .500 mark in eight seasons and restored the school’s strong men’s basketball tradition, posting an 80-49 record over the past five seasons. He piloted the Dutch to an Iowa Conference championship in 2009-10 and also gained an NCAA Division III tournament berth. Boschee was named the league’s coach of the year. He had a 115-115 overall mark at Central.
A Valley City, N.D. native, Boschee was an all-region player at the University of North Dakota before serving as an assistant at Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.).
Bemidji State is an NCAA Division II institution in Bemidji, Minn. and is a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
“Mike did a terrific job and we appreciate his years of service at Central,” said interim athletics director Eric Van Kley. “This is an opportunity for him to move closer to home. We wish Mike and his family nothing but the best.”
The Dutch return 11 varsity letterwinners from a squad that was 18-8 in 2011-12. Central has captured 16 conference championships, with nine NCAA tournament berths, the most of any league school.
“We will begin a national search immediately,” Van Kley said. “It will be swift and thorough.”
