15 NCAA Div. III individual championships
DES MOINES—Central College track and field athlete Ethan Miller (senior, Seymour) was the top Division III competitor in Drake Relays decathlon Thursday, scoring 7,076 points to take fourth overall.
Miller’s point total was shy of his personal best (7,170) from his 2011 national championship but was enough to send him to the top of the Division III list. He recorded marks of 14.95 seconds in the 110 hurdles, 119 feet, 1 inch in the discus, 15-1 in the pole vault, 149-2 in the javelin throw, and 4:49.46 in the 1,500 meters.
“Ethan had an excellent meet,” said coach Joe Dunham. “He took a really big step forward in the comeback from his injury and it will be exciting to see what he can do the rest of the season.”
Meanwhile, freshman teammate Eric Larson (Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) finished 12th (6,183) and Breighen Powell (senior, Wellman, Mid-Prairie HS) was 14th (4,997). Larson recorded marks of 15.48 in the 110 hurdles, 70-7 in the discus, 11-5.75 in the pole vault, 120-0 in the javelin throw, and 4:39.56 in the 1,500 meters. Powell recorded marks of 16.7 in the 110 hurdles, 100-11 in the discus, 11-5.75 in the pole vault, and 171-6 in the javelin throw. He didn’t finish the 1,500 meters. Larson added 31 points to his best mark from earlier in the season and is currently ranked 10th in Division III.
“All three of the guys competed hard,” said Dunham. “Not everything went perfectly but that’s part of the sport and I’m proud of how they performed over the last two days.”
